This absolutely outstanding book is going to set the benchmark for any future writing about models. The bulk of its 496 pages is given over to a catalogue of over 200 tractor models and versions. These represent tractors produced by 25 different Original Equipment Manufacturers from Allis-Chalmers to Valtra Valmet.

A double-page spread is devoted to each model with five views of the model as well as original packaging. The photographs are accompanied by clear specifications, production notes and details of distinguishing features.

Three indexes – model, issue date and issue code - help enthusiasts find their way around the book. David Pullen includes features on tractor range, bodies and cabs, skid units, linkages and drawbars, drivers, steering and wheels, packaging and coding, tyre and track designations.

The scope of the book is wide, defined by the author as follows:

‘This book looks at Britains’ model tractor developments and releases between 1998 and 2008, since RC2 took control and production moved to China. It includes all models marketed under Britains’ brand, mainly European issues, and 1:32nd tractors, Britains’ traditional scale, marketed in packaging with dual Britains and Ertl branding. This branding was used for John Deere and North American releases produced from around 2002.

‘Although dual branding was dropped in 2008 for North American releases and models were once again branded Ertl only, they are included in this book to complete the 1:32nd model tractor story.

‘Models originally developed and marketed under the Ertl brand before 2002 only appear when sold under Britains, dual Britains and Ertl or, later, Ertl names. Third party conversions or Code 3s are mentioned only where it helps to identify genuine models.’

The word 'bible' is sometimes loosely applied to big books; in this case it is completely fitting.
