Four Wheel Drive Tractors - Stuart Gibbard Book

Which British company …

Exported its crawlers and four-wheel drive tractors to nearly 150 countries from the Arctic Circle to Australia …
Produced the only tractor to have crossed the Channel under its own steam …
Designed tractors for use in agriculture, industry, forestry, sugar cane, mines, for towing aircraft and launching lifeboats …
Was at the forefront of transport engineering design and innovation, producing trucks, vans, tanks and specialised off-road vehicles?

County, of course.

Stuart Gibbard’s lively collection of over 280 rare photographs illustrates the diverse range of County prototype and production machines from 1929 to 1983 and beyond. The author includes captions describing the photographs in detail and he also gives a brief history of the company and the personalities involved.

Following the introduction of the Fordson Super Major skid units in 1960, the agricultural County tractor became known as the Ploughman P55 and was fitted with an uprated 55 hp version of the Ford engine. It was also finished in the same yellow colour scheme as the industrial crawlers.
The crossing of the 28 nautical miles from Cap Gris Nez on the French coast to Kingsdown near Dover took 7 hours 50 minutes at an average speed of about 3.5 knots.
