The era of Fordson Farming was probably the greatest epoch in the history of Ford tractors. It began in 1945 with the launch of the stalwart E27N Major and continued through the E1A series, which included the acclaimed Fordson Diesel Major. In 1957, the Major got a workmate as the Dexta added a new facet to Fordson Farming before the ‘New Performance’ models of the mid-1960s brought the era to a close.

The script has been written by Stuart Gibbard, author of the award-winning Ford Tractor Story books, who has selected some of the best examples of the Fordson tractors of the period for the programme. Over thirty machines, from Dagenham production models to rare four-wheel drive and tracked conversions made by manufacturers such as County, Doe and Roadless, are seen in action with authentic implements at various locations.

1945 Major   This 1945 Major has retained many early features of the basic agricultural model. Billy Woods is using an Elite plough.
The third Doe to be built was this Dual Power owned by Richard Fenton. It was supplied new to a farm in Suffolk in November 1958

1961 Dexta   Still used for planting potatoes and bedding plants, this 1961 Dexta is an example of the re-styling that took place when the Super Major was launched. It is owned by Alan Thacker.

Roadless Ploughmaster 6/4   One of the most popular conversions of the mid 1960s – the Roadless Ploughmaster 6/4. David Fenton is at the wheel.
For export to North America the Super Major was re-badged Ford 5000, the name later to be given to the largest of the four new tractors being developed for the ‘worldwide’ 6X range. This example has been recently restored by owner Richard Gratton following its repatriation from Regina, Canada.
