Farm machinery enthusiast and photographer Chris Lockwood shows a representative sample of the combine harvesters which are most likely to be seen working in Britains fields. In general he has featured modern combines though there are also one or two classics and he shows several models from the most widely seen makes.

Most of Chriss photographs show combines at work. He has selected shots that demonstrate different aspects of the machines clearly their headers, straw choppers and so on. Opposite each full-page photograph his concise text explains what is going on in the pictures. He includes some basic technical specifications such as header size and engine power. He gives years of introduction, how the machine fits into the manufacturers range and the country of manufacture and/or assembly.

Claas Lexion 600, launched in 2005 as one of the world’s most powerful combines.

The models fall into three main classes: conventional, hybrid and rotary. Chris completes his book with three cutaways to show these layouts which are further described in a page of combine talk.

Farm machinery buffs will enjoy this book, but it is particularly designed to be an introduction for novice enthusiasts of all ages.

Chris Lockwood comes from an East Anglian farming family. He has over 100,000 images of tractors at work, the basis of his highly popular website: midsuffolkagriphotos.
