Details

The Mk V was announced in 1958 as a successor to the popular, but dated, Mk III. The new machine was not just a development of its predecessor – it was a completely new design from the chassis up.

The Mark Vs proved immensely popular, with a reputation for efficiency, reliability and productivity. This success was built on by the introduction of the Ergomatic tilt-cabbed models in 1966. However, the market for rigid eight-wheelers was by now beginning its decline. However, AEC found a continuing market for its six-wheel rigids and tractive units, with the RAF buying significant numbers of long-wheelbase rigids for various duties.

AEC authority Graham Edge tells the story in detail, accompanying it by many fine photographs of the Mark Vs performing work of various kinds, from loading a Cat D9 to re-fuelling an Aer Lingus plane. The Appendices list chassis designations, wheelbases and give engine details.
