Details

This attractive handy-sized paperback for the novice enthusiast and rambler shows forty-four breeds of chicken that you are likely to find pecking and preening around Britain today.

Each breed is presented with a quality photograph. Jack accompanies each with a description of the bird’s history and characteristics such as flightiness. Jack goes on to give guidance on whether the breed is suitable for the amateur poultry keeper and what their egg-laying averages are likely to be.

Unlike other animal breeds in the Know Your … series most chicken breeds have recognised colours and variants. Jack describes these in a special panel. He also includes general information on chicken terms and features such as comb shapes.

Jack Byard was born in Bradford in Yorkshire where he has lived and worked all his life. He always had a deep affection for his rural heritage and so wrote this book with a view to sharing with others the countryside that he loves.
