During the last months of his school career he played truant in order to haul hardcore in a five-ton Canadian Ford on private land from Gravesend aerodrome to a local building site. After leaving school he became a drivers mate, got his driving licence and was called up for national service.

When Les was demobbed he drove eight-wheel Atkinsons on an A licence, working for Arnolds Transport at Gravesend. He went on to drive for Everards road tankers, Tankfreight, Pickfords, Thomas Allen and for fourteen years with BP long distance. His final stint was with P & O before he retired in 1998 after 46 years in road transport.

After he retired, Les recalled his early working years in Truckers North Truckers South. Much of his spare time is taken up with his 1946 OLAD Bedford which he and his wife Pauline take to many steam and road truck shows.
