Earthmovers in Scotland: Quarries, Roads and Forestry - A Spotlight on author David Wylie

David Wylie is a professional engineer and photojournalist who is registered with the Engineering Council in the UK.

From a young age, David has had family connections with the construction and plant hire business and as a Glaswegian attended part-time classes in photography at Glasgow University. His first mining images were taken back in October 1994 at an opencast fireclay and coal mine near Bathgate where J Fenton & Son were operating large mining machines, and he has never looked back since. However, it was 2009 when an extraordinary career in photojournalism began, after he entered and won a competition by Contract Journal and subsequently visited Scotland’s biggest opencast coal mine - Broken Cross. Over an extremely successful career, David has earnt many commissions from major earthmoving manufacturers to supply stunning images and video work for in-house magazines, advertisements, online media and machine brochures. Also, as Scottish Correspondent for Earthmovers Magazine, Wylie has enjoyed privileged access to the mines, quarries, road projects and forestry sites.

Vast amounts of knowledge and experience has led to David covering machines, sites and people all over Scotland, as well reporting on mining machine factories and tradeshows in Europe. Wylie’s latest book offering, ‘Earthmovers in Scotland: Mining, Quarries, Roads and Forestry’ provides an exhilarating read for earthmovers enthusiasts, owners, drivers and site managers worldwide. There is no doubt that during his visits David has witnessed some of the biggest and arguably the best, earthmoving machinery in the world in action and now provides you with the opportunity to see them for yourself! The book brings together 32 of David’s reports to tell the story of the highly skilled, experienced owners, drivers and managers that work with earthmoving equipment and explains why they select, maintain and operate these machines. The book features some of the largest earthmovers in the UK, such as Caterpillar’s D11R bulldozer and Liebherr’s massive 320 tonne R9350s. Taking pride of place are over 400 stunning photographs, likely to have not been seen before and many of which feature machines that were the first of their kind. Each high quality photo has been carefully composed to capture each machine in all its power and brilliance with the spectacular Scottish scenery as a backdrop. David has also presented 80 of the most important and detailed images as double pages to help you get even closer to the action.

This beautiful book sets out to provide its readers with a comprehensive look at the Scottish earthmovers scene, and certainly cannot be missed by like-minded enthusiasts.
