An ideal gift for the truck lover in the household Review by Road Rover
Rating
Every year on the first Sunday in August, hundreds gather to see one of the greatest displays of historic commercial vehicles.
First organised in 1969, the Trans Pennine Run attracts an annual entry of around 200 vehicles coming from all over the UK. The event starts at Birch Services on the M62 at Manchester at about 7.30 in the morning and runs for 64 miles via Rochdale, Halifax and Bradford, taking in some of the finest Yorkshire scenery along the way.
From 11.30 the vehicles start arriving at the famous Harrogate Stray where they are then displayed to the public. Avid photographer Roy Dodsworth has been following the event since the late 1990s and has a collection of over 3,000 images taken there.
His book, The Trucks of the Trans Pennine Run, assembles 262 of Roy's favourite truck photos, including a brief history about each, with many having been restored to their original livery. It would make an ideal gift for the truck lover in the household! (Posted on 12/05/2017)
A quality publication fit for any Commercial Vehicle enthusiast's library Review by David Berry - Leyland Society, Chairman
Rating
Well over 250 glorious colour pictures of Commercial vehicles of all types adorn the 176 glossy pages, each annotated with relevant details of the vehicles pictured.
Although now retired the author, Roy Dodsworth's career in the Police and Retail security ensure his eye for detail has transferred to his love of historic commercials and what better way to demostrate this than by utilising the various stages of the Trans Pennine Run.
From a 1927 Leland FE1 (ex Newquay UDC Fire Brigade) to the monster 1976 Scammell Contractor "Renown" belonging to Wynn's. No matter what particular facet of vintage commercials interests you, you will be delighted with the quality and range of vehicles displayed.
This is a quality publication fit for any Commercial Vehicle enthusiast's library. (Posted on 30/01/2017)
A photographic record of one of the most famous and best loved classic lorry runs of all Review by Peter Simpson - Classic and Vintage Commercials
Rating
Old Pond Publishing, are old hands at the lorry publishing business. Their latest - The Trucks of the Trans Pennine Run by Roy Dodsworth is a photographic record of one of the most famous and best loved classic lorry runs of all, and which has taken place on the first Sunday in August every year since 1968. The route from Manchester to Harrogate is iconic too. Avid photographer Roy Dodsworth has been following the event since the late 1990s and in doing so has built up a collection of over 3000 images taken on the event. 262 of those are included in this book - a truly eclectic mix that fully reflects the diversity of entrants on the run. The pictures are fully and, it seems to us, accurately captioned too. This book appeal, though, extends beyond those who have taken part in this event - anyone with an interest in old lorries will find something of interest here (Posted on 20/01/2017)
A lovely book to sit and look at and remember pleasant days out watching the runs Review by Vintage Roadscene
Rating
Roy has written articles for Vintage Roadscene, including reports of the Trans-Pennine run. As a Yorkshire-based member of the HCVS, he has been closely associated with the event over the years. This book contains nearly 300 nicely-reproduced colour pictures in its 174 pages. The pictures have been taken by the author over the last 20-odd years, at the starting points, along the route and at the finish on The Stray, Harrogate. They show a wide variety of vehicles, from the very old to not so old, large and small, nearly all beautifully restored and liveried, a few of which have since changed colours. Each picture is accompanied by an informative caption, offering details of the vehicle and some background to its appearance or the type of lorry. This is a lovely book to sit and look at and remember pleasant days out watching the runs, or to see what you might have missed. If you like old vehicle rallies and road runs, you'll love this book.
