The Leyland Society Review Review by The Leyland Society Review
Rating
'the photography is excellent given that the majority of pictures were taken long before digital cameras they capture an almost forgotten era of pre-and post-war working practices that would not be tolerated today. A well written and well-presented book that would be a good addition to any transport related library.' - David Berry, Chairman, The Leyland Society (Posted on 29/08/2017)
A comprehensively illustrated new book Review by Classic Truck
Rating
A comprehensively illustrated new book, unpretentiously titled Robert Walker (Haulage) Ltd, charts the history of the firm from its earliest beginnings with a single truck transporting fresh produce. It has been written by Carl Jarman who brings to it the extra insight of someone who is himself in the transport business. It therefore gains from a professional's understanding of all aspects of the firm's development, from operations and equipment to maintenance, management and the quirks of personnel.
With his history of Robert Walker (Haulage), author Carl Jarman has pulled it off perfectly. What gives the book extra value is the prolific range of photographs depicting the company's evolution portrayed though the changing make-up of its fleet. As the author states in the introductory pages, a picture is worth a thousand words - and the book has 229, vividly tracing eight decades of road transport history.

An excellent read Review by Keith

Felt I must write and compliment all concerned for the publishing of the book ROBERT WALKER (Haulage) Ltd. An excellent read with very good photography, particularly the black and white ones of the early wheeled tipper trucks. Not weighed down with endless fleet lists and chassis numbers - just good, straightforward, no-nonsense journalism. Hooray! Looking forward to a second read (Posted on 25/05/2017)
A good book Review by Vintage Spirit Magazine

The Stockport firm of Robert Walker (Haulage) Ltd is a family firm which specialises in the transportation of forklift trucks across the UK and Southern Ireland, operating a fleet of 35 tractor units and 50 trailers, all of which are low-loaders or semi low-loaders. The firm can trace its origins back to 1935 and began to specialise in the transportation of forklift trucks in the late 1960s.
This book details the history of the firm's success, including many anecdotes and 185 previously unprinted pictures of the four wheel basic lorries that Robert used in the early days, to the latest vehicles operated by this specialist haulier.
This is a large (A4 sized) book that is full of pictures that illustrate the firm's history, and there are some real gems, such as Scammell Highwayman tractors moving some interesting loads in the 1960s, though the fleet included other makes too. One of the interesting loads moved was Donald Campbell's Bluebirds, including the K7 in which he was tragically killed in 1967.
Many of the photographs are blown up to cover two pages, so are very large, and at first sight, some do suffer a bit from over magnification and so are a little 'soft', but, to be honest, this detracts very little from the fascinating subjects in the pictures, and so this variation in quality can be readily forgiven.
This is a good book to dip in and out of with many pictures, both older and modern, to study, for they are full of detail. They say a picture tells a thousand words; these certainly do! (Posted on 25/05/2017)

An ideal gift for the truck lover Review by Road Rover
Rating
Robert Walker (Haulage) Ltd is a detailed history of the UK's largest fork truck transport company. Penned by author Carl Jarman, the volume tells the story of Robert Walker Haulage, which was established in 1935.
The founder never intended to run a haulage business, as he first bought a lorry to carry produce from his growers to the local markets. He then branched out into other types of transport work including carrying prisoners of war.
Later, his forward thinking sons Brian and Eric saw a niche market in the transport of fork lift trucks and decided to try converting an old RAF trailer into an early fork lift truck carrier. Today the company is in the hands of the third and fourth generations of the family and despite its humble beginnings, it is now the largest fork truck transporter in the UK. The A4 sized hard back work includes 229 previously unprinted pictures of the four wheel basic lorries that Robert used in the early days, to the latest vehicles operated by this specialist haulier. This book will be of interest to truck drivers and other transport enthusiasts.
Robert Walker (Haulage) Ltd would make an ideal gift for the truck lover in any household! (Posted on 12/05/2017)
Over 200 pages covering the vehicles used Review by Vintage Roadscene

The book has obviously been put together in collaboration with members of the Walker family, who still control the company. In over 200 pages, covering the vehicles used, notably ERFs for many years, the trailers converted for their specialist roles, the family, drivers and stories or particular movements and achievements, are accompanies by over 220 photographs, black and white and colour, which are an important feature of the book. They show a wide range of Walker's vehicles over the years, effectively a visual history. (Posted on 09/11/2016)
