Once you start reading, it's hard to put this book down. Review by Vintage Road Scene
This Is a soft-back re-print of a book first published In 1987, back by popular demand, owing to the on-going interest in the feats of those drivers and their vehicles, which made the long overland trip to the Middle East.

For a number of years, the urgent demand for various materials for the development of countries as far away as Saudi Arabia outstripped the capacity of seaport facilities in the Middle East, making the lengthy and difficult road transport from the UK and Western Europe economically viable.

The drivers encountered and had to overcome all sorts of problems, from breakdowns, accidents and illness, to bandits and political unrest, not to mention the everyday language barriers, changing money, obtaining fuel and customs formalities - all helped along by that international currency, packets of cigarettes or bottles of alcohol....

The author, a Canadian-born writer, travelled with some drivers, as the peak of the Middle East traffic was passing in the mid-1980s, writing a very readable account of the ups and downs of the journey, 10,000 miles over mountains and across deserts, taking machinery from Luton to Saudi Arabia, with Bulgarian wine as a return load.

It's all seen from the drivers' perspective, with plenty of background thrown in. Once you start reading, it's hard to put this book down. (Posted on 05/11/2014)
